During the 2nd week of August, Reg and the CMR team are absolutely dismayed to declare they will not be ready in time to catch the boat for the 4 cars, Wairua 1 and 2, Cookie and Issigonis to challenge for their world records on the salt lake of Salar de Uyuini Bolivia during 2023.
After 5 years of planning and 3 years of excruciatingly slow sourcing of specialist parts from a Covid affected world, and expense to not bear thinking about, Reg and the CMR Team have had to face the fact ‘it ain’t going to happen’. The team has worked tirelessly to complete the 4 cars, especially in the closing months, but the cars simply aren’t ready in time. Wairua 2 was the feature reason the team chose to travel to Salar de Uyuni, the Salt Flats of Bolivia to achieve 550Mph (885kph). The usual destination for Land Speed Racing, the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, USA was not suitable in distance for such speeds this challenge presented.
After a small period of mourning, in true Reg Cook/Kiwi Can Do style, the team made a unanimous decision for a new plan, and 2024 planning commenced. Three cars finished, much of the money spent and an experienced team with a desire to finish the job.
Reports from Marcello Alvarez Garcia, our Bolivian CMR LSR event facilitator, confirm that the Uyuni salt flats are in pristine condition ready for us to achieve our land speed record goals.
